For over 70 years, this elegant Waltz in A Minor was catalogued as Chopin's posthumous B. 150. Even the manuscript was in the master's own hand. But the truth lay in the archives of the 19th-century Parisian salon.
Research by musicologists Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger and Louise Dubin has revealed that this rare gem was actually the work of Charlotte de Rothschild—Chopin’s pupil and patron.
It seems that Chopin utilised composition as a pedagogical tool, workshopping these pieces with Charlotte during their lessons. While they enjoy a highly Chopinistic style, the naively simplistic musical ideas and development do not corrolate with Chopin's writing in this era. This delicate voice is distinctly Charlotte's.
You are welcome to listen to Charlotte's complete Quartre Pièces pour Piano alongside some of Chopin's most beloved works in my upcoming double album, The Chopin Connection.
